Thought from around here...

It was so fun to see an old friend from the neighborhood this last week. She grew up vegetarian and now is full vegan. Her whole family- meaning her whole extended family- is too!! She is so inspiring. I thought I was eating healthy but just in an hour of conversation I realized I need to make some changes. Am I ready to give up meat??!! I don't think so yet- considering the bacon cheeseburger I had last night in a moment of weakness!! Do I want to use less cheese, milk products in general, more plant based everything, and yes- probably cut out red meat??!!(Im not sure!) More like all Saturated fat. I eat too much butter. I eat too much cheese. Oh my Sour Cream! Even my beloved Dr. Oz says "no saturated fat!!" and I haven't been able to follow that rule.

Don't I care about my Heart? Longevity? Cancer?

Yes- this is why I cut out all that processed crap years ago- HFCS, Hyd Oils, anything with a chemical name too long to prounounce. Most sugar. We eat oatmeal. we eat Fruit - not pretend fruit snacks- I make homemade- lots of things- most everything. But did I use 2 sticks of butter in my homemade pot pie last week- yes!! Do I use it in my breads and rolls- yes!- well there is a higher way and I tasted it. I've made bread before with oil and yuck- but I had Elizas and yum! She only uses drops of oil compared to what I've used.

You need to check out her blog- there are tons of recipes. http://www.greenereating.com/

I tasted the homemade cheese- so good! (Sesame, Miso stuff like that!) Im going to the store today and Im going to make it. Im also going to buy enough Spinach to fill my whole fridge. I have made spinach smoothies before- actually pretty regularly. But Im going to eat Spinach for breakfast lunch and dinner!!!

I also just watched a documentary "SURFWISE" via netflix. (You can judge me if you want!! The language is terrible!!!! But the story was thought provoking! Robert made me watch it!! I really do have stringent rules about what I watch! I obviously have some guilt about listening to the vulgar language the family uses)

It was about clean living and clean eating- I was so inspired. It is about a family who lived in a camper and surfed everywhere. There are lots of weird quirky things I might not agree with.... But I did get some insight out of the movie-- live your life with passion!!!

One of the great quotes of the movie was:

"If you are living a life of excess (excess pounds, money, things) then you are taking from others who will end up with less. Americans push forward to gain and take and have excess. Are we becoming anti-human by taking as much as we can in the shortest time that we can? In the past people used to fight to not be hungry. We fight everyday to be hungry. We are dying from over eating. It is a struggle. We have to think every time we put something in our mouths, we have to be proactive. We cant eat without thought. Do we just take the steak and start the hummer?!"

Do we want to have a superior state of well being? Be Clean, Eat Clean, Respect our bodies. I know I do.

Now I'm recharged again.

Moderation in all things. Butter, Meat, Sugar, Cheese.

God gave us meat and cream for a reason. We just need to eat it in moderation like in the old days.

Whole grains, natural foods, organic: that is the way to go.

But I don't think you need to go Vegan. In fact, I think that it goes against the word of wisdom. But hey, that is just my opinion.

You look great by the way, and congrats on the baby.

I do believe in moderation too. I do think I need to be more moderate- am I giving up butter no- but Im going to eat less. Even though I thought I was eating healthy- I realized I am eating too much junk still. Do I sound like Im promoting vegan? I just think there are some good things we can take from it.

You look good too Erin- i check your blog and love seeing your kids.

WOW!! Love this. I have been working all day in my kitchen making fruit leathers with just fruit. SOO good. I am so with you on this. I need to cut out candy. Otherwise we eat pretty darn well.

I loved reading your thoughts on this. And I'm adding Surfwise to my queue! It sounds great, the exact kind of thing I want to strive towards.

I agree that moderation is definitely key in any diet choice. Though cutting processed food completely OUT is a choice I would promote worldwide. In my opinion, processed food contributes mostly negative things to society (agriculture, health, lifestyle, etc.). I'm comfortable and happy eating vegetarian (especially in America), but you really can make great food choices no matter what. It's all about CARING, being congnizant of what you're eating, what good it does for your body, where it comes from. That's pretty much all you need.

Another good documentary we enjoyed is Food, Inc. Keep up the good thoughts and inspirations and decisions! You're not alone!

I am very intrigued. We've decided to eat - as soon as our order gets in - only grass-fed humanely raised animals. It's not cutting it out - which is difficult when nursing or pregnant, but we're doing our best. We should probably get back to adding green stuff to our smoothies - by the way, check out BountifulBaskets.org if you haven't already. AN awesome way to get more fruits and vegetables at a reasonable price. I mean - disgustingly cheap. Miss you!

The same stuff is totally on my mind right now so I enjoyed every sentence of this! Liz told me about her spinach/banana/pineapple juice smoothies and I make them constantly now for the kids (w/ some ice). Maybe you can share some of your healthy recipes (for smoothies and anything else), I'd be all over that!
Today I made some banana bread with no sugar or oil. I found this stuff called "Lighter Bake" in the baking aisle yesterday. It's pureed dried plums and apples and replaces oil and butter in baking. It totally worked great in my banana bread. And then I just used a few tablespoons of agave nectar instead of sugar and all whole wheat flour. It wasn't very sweet but it was REALLY good! Anyway, my point was supposed to be that you should try that lighter bake stuff if you haven't before!

As long as people are giving their two cents...

Eating meat every day is against the word of wisdom.

We were made to eat from the earth, not a factory. I teach spin at Golds and totally bought into the protein at every meal that everyone at the gym preaches. Then I started having allergic reactions to protein powder and watched Food, Inc and started down a different path. We've been eating 90% vegan for four months and we feel so different. I've lost 15 pounds, Jared doesn't have acid reflux anymore. My kids are calmer. We love it.

So good for you. The whole world should eat 90% vegan.

Loved reading your post April. I totally agree with conscience eating. When Dustin and I were first trying to get preganant Eliza got in touch with me about the way she and her family eats, and referred me to a few books on the vegan subject. She probably told you about "Eat to Live" and "The China Study"? Great books. I'm not saying that I'm going vegan, but it helps to stay informed and do what's best for your body.
Some people are allergic to products and they don't even know it, because they aren't having full blown allergic reactions. If that is the case the word of wisdom doesn't really apply. If your body reacts badly , don't eat it! Unfortunately, people don't take the time to see how their bodies react to food and think its ok to have this every now and again even though it may be really harming their bodies.
By the way, I'm totally jealous that you and Eliza get to live closer to eachother. It feels like we're all so spread out!
